Applied Defense Solutions currently has an opening for a Staff Accountant at its Columbia, MD headquarters.


Under minimum supervision performs accounting duties which require a strong working knowledge of accounting practice

and theory. Records, classifies, examines, and analyzes data related to accounting transactions to ensure current, accurate,

and complete financial information. Collects, summarizes, and analyzes cost data for use in operational trends and preparing

cost and financial statements. This position reports directly to the CFO.


§ Responsible for a variety of accounting functions such as accounts payable, cash receipts and fixed assets.

§ Supporting accounts receivable as required during the billing processing.

§ Supporting month end closing process, including account reconciliations.

§ Processing semi-monthly payroll.

§ Assisting with preparation of budgets and financial audits.

§ Preparing specialized reports and analysis.

§ Assisting in the preparation of subcontractor and vendor accruals as services/goods are received in accordance with

GAAP and internal policies to ensure that the project's cost/commitment is accurately captured and reported

internally and externally.

§ Applying advanced understanding of accounting principles and industry standards in the analysis of financial data.

Output is used by financial management towards decisions that impact the organization.

§ Participating in conversion to new accounting and purchasing systems.

§ Evaluating multiple source data applying advanced financial and accounting principles and techniques, industry,

business, professional, government and company standards.

§ Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of relevant discipline(s), industry practices, trends, and applications.

§ Sharing responsibility of self-development with immediate supervisor.

§ Performing additional related assignments as needed.

§ Qualifications for the position include a Bachelorâs degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field from a four-year

college or university. Willingness (and eligibility) to sit for the CPA exam a plus.

§ 2+ years of accounting experience.

§ Experience in government contracting and financial statement preparation, advanced excel and data management

skills is highly desired.

§ Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel. Intermediate Microsoft Word and PowerPoint Skills.

§ Knowledge and experience with Unanet accounting software is desired.

§ Knowledge of federal acquisition laws and regulations, including Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR), the Defense

Federal Acquisition Regulations (DFAR) and agency specific regulations preferred.

§ Strong working knowledge of government contract types, billing types and requirements, and contract closeout

requirements is desired.

§ Must be a team player with the ability to deploy where needed; who has excellent oral and written communication

skills, meets deadlines, and enjoys problem solving.

§ Sound interpersonal skills used when interfacing, coordinating, and negotiating with Company personnel, customers,

and suppliers.

§ Ability to exercise discretion using sound judgment while complying with policies, procedures, appropriate principles

and applicable state and federal laws and regulations.

§ Excellent planning, time management and organization skills.
